NMFC Changes

****please note the below classification changes that will become effective August 5, 2017.

  • Pipe/Tubing -Aluminum – 52175 is being updated to reflect classifications based on length and density. Item 50940 for aluminum electric conduits is cancelled. View this Document
  • Glass windshields – new density based item 86630 is created for glass windshields with density breaks at 4 and 8 pcf. Items 20100 and 86560 are cancelled. View this Document
  • Sewing Machines/Cabinets/Heads – Click the link, many things related to sewing machines are changing. New item numbers and classifications. View this Document
  • Containers, shipping, temperature controlled – new Item established for this product at cl 92.5.View this Document
  • Water softeners/filters/purifiers/water filter tanks – Item 69105 is created for these items. Item 69095 will be amended to reflect that it does not apply to water. Items 69110, 121265, 132900, 159490, 181110, and 181760 are all cancelled and referenced to 69105. View this Document
  • Dietary supplements/vitamins – New item 57300 for dietary supplements and vitamins with density breaks at 8 and 12 pcf. Item 58770 is being changed to remove references to vitamins. View this Document
  • Item 680 – Sec. 15 is added to this rule – Unless otherwise provided in individual descriptions of articles, when damage to the shipping package, including cosmetic damage, will result in a claim for loss or damage, such package(s) must be overpacked or otherwise protected by packaging materials sufficient to prevent damage to the package.View this Document
  • Boat/aircraft seats – items 12340 and 25250 will be cancelled and moved to the NOI, 172670.View this Document
  • Air or hydronic furnaces/brick –item 32270 created for bricks for thermal energy storage, cl 50. Item 122870 created for electric thermal energy storage heaters/furnaces.View this Document

  • Shades/Blinds – NMFC 174200 is adjusted to be uniform with similar length based classifications already in the NMFC. View this Document
  • Ventilators/Fans and roof ventilators – Item 63497 is cancelled and moved to item 61940 to eliminate confusion between the two item numbers. View this Document
  • Dampers/Louvers/Shutters – Item 55742 is amended to remove separate classes based on material construction. Density breaks now at 4 and 10 pcf. View this Document
  • Pipe or Tubing, brass, bronze, or copper, insulated or jacketed with expanded plastic – 51900 will be a new item for this product at cl 175View this Document
  • Licorice – new item 40075 created to cover licorice sticks and compounds, cancelling items 40070 and 40080. View this Document
  • Soapstone or Talc Blocks, Pieces, or Slabs – New item 90390 to cover this product. Classification based on shipment composition and length. Items 90420 and 90360 will be cancelled. View this Document
  • Refrigerant Reclaiming or Recovery Machines – Density based item 123570 created, item 123580 is cancelled. View this Document
  • Trowels/Garden Trowels/Trowel Transplanters – Item 8710 is cancelled and changed to item 176740, class based on density break at 10 pcf. View this Document

  • Seats/bicycle seats – 190970 is cancelled and 172670 is adjusted to reflect the standard 11 sub density scale.View this Document

  • Dishwashers, other than household type – Classes will now be based on packaging and density.View this Document
  • Scaffolding – Items 33460, 33500, 33520, 33530, 33540, and 93620 are all cancelled and will be referred to item 172521. This item will be amended to provide classifications based on length and density.View this Document
  • Foil, foil wrappers, foil scrap (aluminum) – New item 71770 with classification for foil based on density. Items 71700, 71705, 71710, 71715, 71720, 71740, 71760, and 71800 are all cancelled and referred to 71770. View this Document
  • Film or sheeting – NMFC 156830 is being changed to a density based item based on whether or not the freight is food or pharmaceutical grade or not. In the past the classification just had to exceed 35 pcf or it switched to plastic articles. View this Document
  • Bathroom scales – Item 100510 will be amended to reflect class 92.5. View this Document
  • Paper shredders – Item 126465 is changed to a density based item and new note added to reflect that this applies on shredders capable of shredding plastic cards or discs. View this Document
  • Heat exchangers – Item 122830 is the past has been a straight class 85, this item will now reflect classifications based on packaging and density. View this Document
  • Duct or Flues, air or smoke, other than flexible – Items 51580, 51590, 51630, and 51780 are all cancelled and changed to NMFC 51045 which will be based on packaging and density.View this Document
  • Grease traps or interceptors – new NMFC 52585 for plastic grease traps/interceptors. View this Document
  • Cookies/Crackers – NMFC Items 72742 and 72743 are cancelled and redirected to Item 72040 which is a full scale density item.View the Document
  • Potty chairs – New item 161360 will be created at class 200 for potty chairs. Item 172700 will be given a new Note, 172701 that clarifies it does not apply on potty chairs.View this Document

    ****please note the below classification changes that will become effective November 29, 2014.

    • Coolers, Iceboxes, or Refrigerators – NMFC 53100 and 53120 are both cancelled and referred to NMFCs 53025 and 53180. 53025 will be a full scale density item and is designed for coolers/iceboxes/refrigerators without the mechanical cooling or freezing apparatus. NMFC 53180 will be a flat class 150 and will apply on Refrigerators or freezers shipped with the mechanical cooling or freezing apparatus.

    • Sofas/Couches/Chaise Lounges/Daybeds, etc – NMFC 80865 is adjusted to reflect a flat class of 250 for all items falling within this classification. All previous subs (backs detached/dual-purpose) are cancelled. 80870 is cancelled and referred to 80865.

    • Chairs/Stools – folding or revolving chairs or stool, chaise lounges, sofas, settees, gliders, NMFC 80770 with classification based on SU nested, SU not nested, and KD is cancelled and referred to 80580 (full scale density) or the new 80865 dependent on the actual item shipped.

    • Racks – pallet or warehouse, metal – NMFC 164340 is adjusted to reflect classifications based on greatest dimension and density.

    • Radioactive materials – NMFC 164900 created at class 250. Prohibited commodity so should not be picked up anyway.

    • Glass, flexible – NMFC 86710 is created for flexible glass, class 125

    • Cuttings, Scions, or Seedlings // Florist or Nursery Stock – NMFC 71175 is cancelled and will now fall under NMFC 71200, Florist or Nursery Stock. 71200 is adjusted to reflect classifications based on packaging.

    • Sodium Hydrosulfate/Metal – NMFC 46370 and 136380 are cancelled and referred to 44515.

    • Ethylene Oxide – NMFC 85855 is cancelled and referred to 85900.

    ****please note the below classification changes that will become effective August 09, 2014.

    • Air conditioners/Heat Pumps/Air Handlers/Refrigeration condensors – NMFC 114125 is changed to reflect classifications based on packaging and density. NMFC 114126 is cancelled. ***note, this item is set for arbitration. It may not go into effect on the above date.
    • Circuit boards – NMFC 61045 is changed to reflect classifications based on a standard 11 sub density scale. Previously this was a value based classification.
    • Mixers/Peelers/Food processors/blenders – classification is adjusted to reflect class 100 instead of class 85.
    • Cages/Kennels/Doghouses – NMFC 39520 is adjusted to reflect, density, length, and how it is mounted on the pallet/platform.
    • Air cleaners/Dehumidifiers – NMFC 114110 is adjusted to reflect density and packaging.
    • Shingles/Panels (wooden) – NMFCs 35070, 113280, 113300 are cancelled referencing to new item 170400 naming Shakes or Shingles, including Shake or Shingle Panels or Corners (wood). Class 70 will be applicable.
    • Hatches/Hatch covers – boat – NMFC 24850 is amended to reflect a density break at 12 pcf.
    • Kits (First Aid, Highway Emergency, Emergency Preparedness, Survival) – NMFCs 56780, 108075, 108130, and 108135 are cancelled and will reference new item 108107 which will be a 9 sub density scale.
    • Bacteria cultures – new item 72747 at class 85.
    • Showcases or display cases (steel or wood furniture) – NMFC 82580 is cancelled with reference to new NMFC 82630 based on a 5 pcf density break.
    • Radiator Cores – NMFC 164790 is cancelled and NMFC 128130 is adjusted to reflect radiator cores with classification based on density and packaging.
    • Obsolete provisions – NMFCs 29550 (Pyrographic boxes), 38260 (Coal chutes), 39020 (Wood grave vaults), 42437 (Chair/TV combo units), 57710 (angled computers), 60430 (Metal melting furnace parts), and 71540 (Deer Tongue) are all cancelled as being obsolete.

    ****please note the below classification changes that will become effective December 14, 2013.

    • Glass, flat, bent or not bent – NMFC is being adjusted to reflect class based on length and density.
      NMFC 86700 – Glass
    • Cabinets or lockers / Base cabinets / Kitchen or bathroom cabinets / Sink or stove cabinets – NMFC 80440 is being changed from a classification based on SU/KD to a full scale density classification. 80445, 80450, 80460, and 80470 are all canceled and referred back to NMFC 80440.
      NMFC 80440 – Cabinets
    • Earphones / Headphones / Headsets – this is a new item with cl 175 applicable.
      NMFC 61575 – Headphones
    • Cabinets, fire hose or fire extinguisher storage – NMFC is updated to reflect cl 150 instead of cl 110.
      NMFC 39330 – Cabinets Fire Hose or Extinguisher
    • Broilers, Grills, Roasters, or Smokers – Ceramic – New NMFC to cover grills like The Big Green Egg. Class dependent on density.
      NMFC 25850 – Ceramic grills
    • Skateboards – NMFC 17300 is being updated from cl 70 to reflect class based on density.
      NMFC 17300 – Skateboards
    • Front baby carriers, Slings/Wraps – NMFC 187645 for carrying cases or bags is updated to include these types of baby carriers as full scale density items.
      NMFC 187645 – Slings/Wraps
    • Obsolete Provisions – NMFC 16510 (Wood golf club heads), NMFC 24560 (Binnacles), NMFC 28020 (Wooden Telephone booths), and NMFC 112840 (Cigar box lumber) are all cancelled as obsolete.

    *****Please note the below classification changes that will become effective August 24, 2013

    • Auto Parts – this is by far the largest change this time around. NMFCs 19100, 19120, 19140, 19160, 19165, and 19180 are all being cancelled and moved to NMFC 18260 which is a full scale density item. – View this Document
    • Stone Blocks, Pieces, or Slabs – NMFC 90500 is being changed to take into account the length of the stone blocks or slabs when not shipped diagonally. – View this Document
    • Machinery, plastic pipe fusion, including Butt Fusion Machines – NMFC 124668 is being cancelled with new NMFC 124666 becoming applicable, based on density and packaging. – View this Document
    • Bars, nutritional or snack (granola, cereal, grain, or protein bars) – NMFC 72045 is being amended to provide a density break at 15pcf. – View this Document
    • Ceiling or Interior Siding, or Ceiling or Interior Siding Moldings, Panels, Pans, or Ornaments – NMFCs 36000, 36010, 36020, and 36850 are all being cancelled and referenced to new item, 36005. This item will now be based on greatest shipping dimension and density. – View this Document
    • Forms, Molds, or Tubes, cement or concrete construction, Ducts, air system, fiberboard, paperboard, or pulpboard, or Liners, cement or concrete construction forms: NMFC 75925 will be updated to provide classes based on greatest dimension and density. – View this Document
    • Gases or Gas Mixtures – NMFCs 85540, 85680, 85700, 85860, 85915, 85920, 86052, 86060, 86100, 86120, 86150 are all being cancelled and referenced to new NMFC 85880. This includes but is not limited to Oxygen, Nitrous Oxide, Refrigerant gasses, Nitrogen, Neon, Helium, etc… – View this Document
    • Casings, sausage or food product – NMFC 41650 is updated to provide classes for casings shipped in brine and density provisions for not shipped in brine. – View this Document
    • Kits or Sets, coffee service – NMFC 73725 is being cancelled and referred to 72680, Coffee, NOI, which is a density based item. – View this Document
    • Snowplows, Blades, Snow Pushers, Mounts/Arms, or Devices – NMFCs 130182 and 130185 are being cancelled and will refer to 130195 which will be amended to reflect classes based on density. – View this Document
